There's Lead in My Grasshoppers


SAN FRANCISCO – Care packages from Mexico bring tastes of home like fried grasshoppers right to Oralia Maceda’s home in Fresno, Calif. But now she is afraid they could be also be bringing lead poisoning. A new report has linked high levels of lead poisoning found among American children in Seaside, Calif. to the soil of several small villages in the Mexican state of Oaxaca. The U.S.-born children of Oaxacan immigrants have been ingesting the lead through fried grasshoppers and other traditional homemade foods sent to them by their relatives in Zimatlán, a district in Oaxaca.
